Through technological advancements employed at strategically placed production plants, Omnia manufactures a wide range of fertilizer and specialty products developed to assist customers in increasing yield and reducing risk.
The innovation behind Omnia’s production capabilities is evident in, amongst others, its world class nitric acid complex, located in Sasolburg. The first of its kind in the country, this complex represents a milestone in the development of nitrogen production in South Africa.
Also specialising in the production of ammonium nitrate, the complex comprises a liquid, granular and anhydrous ammonium nitrate plant. Omnia is the only company in South Africa that produces nitrate-based products.
Ammonium Nitrate is produced by the acid-base reaction of ammonia in its gas form and concentrated nitric acid. Excess water is evaporated and ammonium nitrate melt is formed. This is then granulated by undergoing a spraying and tumbling process in a rotating drum. The granules are dried, cooled and coated with an anti-caking compound to prevent sticking and clumping.
Omnia’s unique chemical granulation process ensures even distribution of nutrients across a field, as every granule contains all the registered nutrients in the correct ratio. This is one of the ways in which the farmer’s yields are improved and farming risks are reduced.
Ammonium nitrate is used in agriculture as a perfectly balanced fertilizer for optimal crop nutrition. It has many proven benefits compared to a reduced nitrogen source such as urea, further increasing yields and reducing risks.
The new nitric acid plant produces 1 000 tonnes per day, 40% more than the previous plant. This ensures that Omnia’s Sasolburg complex remains an unrivalled front-runner in ammonium nitrate production in Southern Africa… producing specialty products of the highest of quality standards.
